The Aegis family provides voltage surge protection for various power and signal lines. The surge may be due to lightning discharges, radio transmissions, or other transients. Each member has a set of protective elements that combine rapid response with energy dissipation capability. In most cases a surge can be quickly absorbed without any adverse effect to the system being protected. It is important to note however that no protective system will be indefinitely effective. At some point repeated surges will destroy the device. Aegis devices may be checked at any time, and most members have built-in diagnostic indicators.

All devices have a grounding
lug. It is imperative that this be connected to a true earth
ground, and that this be checked periodically. Typically this
is done through heavy copper braid and a deep copper earth stake.
